The importance of oral hygiene for kids can not be overstated. As children, they are oblivious of some habits that may be harmful to their teeth and overall health. This is why it is on you as a parent or guardian to understand these dental habits for kids and inculcate them in your wards.

Here are some tips to help you:

 1. Start Early

You should strive to begin oral care even before your child’s first tooth appears. Gently wipe their gums with a soft, damp cloth after feeding. This helps remove bacteria and establishes a routine.

As teeth emerge, switch to a soft-bristled toothbrush designed for infants. Use a toothbrush with a small head and a long handle, making it easier to maneuver in their mouth.

 

2. Make Brushing Fun

Brushing doesn’t have to be mechanical or seem like a chore to your kids. Use colorful toothbrushes with their favorite characters. Let your child choose their toothbrush to create excitement and engagement.

You might also want to consider playing their favorite song or setting a timer to make brushing a fun activity. Encourage them to brush for at least two minutes, and make it a game to brush for the entire duration of the song.

Brush your teeth together to create a positive role model. Children love imitating their parents, so let them see you taking care of your teeth and make it a family activity.

 

3. Teach Proper Brushing Technique

Use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. Fluoride helps strengthen the enamel and prevent tooth decay. Teach your child not to swallow the toothpaste, as excessive fluoride ingestion can lead to dental fluorosis.

Teach your child to brush in gentle, circular motions. Emphasize that they should brush all tooth surfaces, including the front, back, and chewing surfaces. Demonstrate proper technique and provide guidance as needed.

Encourage your child to spit out the toothpaste after brushing but not to rinse their mouth immediately. This allows the fluoride in the toothpaste to continue protecting their teeth.

 

4. Introduce Flossing

Once your child’s teeth start touching, usually around the age of two, introduce flossing. Use child-friendly flossers or floss picks to make it easier for them to handle.

Show them how to slide the floss gently between their teeth, forming a C shape around each tooth. Be patient and offer assistance until they develop the dexterity to floss independently.

 

5. Limit Sugary Snacks and Drinks

We know children have a natural liking for sugary snacks, however you need to ensure they avoid frequent consumption of sugary snacks and drinks, as they can contribute to tooth decay. Opt for healthier alternatives like fresh fruits and vegetables.

If your child does indulge in sugary treats, encourage them to rinse their mouth with water afterward to minimize the exposure to sugar.

 

6. Schedule Regular Dental Check-ups

Visit the dentist for regular check-ups every six months. Regular dental visits help identify and address any oral health issues early on. The dentist can also provide professional cleanings, fluoride treatments, and guidance on proper oral care techniques specific to your child’s needs.
