Preventing Eye Injuries What to Note

Preventing Eye Injuries: What to Note

July 18th, 2022

The eye is one of the most sensitive parts of the body; as such, it is only vital you care for it properly. Eye injuries are common among children and adults, with about 90% occurring in informal settings or environments with no enforced policies to prevent eye injuries.

Many of these injuries result in temporary or permanent blindness. This is why you have to take eye protection seriously. We have curated some tips to help you in this regard. Read on.

   1. Ensure safety on the stairs, including lights and handrails

It is difficult to see properly in the dark. This is why it is important to install lights at every corner of your home to avoid bumping into dangerous objects that might make you fall or pose a danger to your eyes. You need sufficient lighting to see where you are going. Handrails, meanwhile, are a necessity to help you ascend and descend the stairs carefully.

  1. Wear an eye protective gear

You should wear eye protective gear when doing some tricky chores. For instance, wearing a protective eye wear while mowing the lawn will prevent debris from entering your eyes. Also, when you’re using a chemical substance, make sure you wear a safety goggle to prevent an eye injury.

  1. Do not look at the sun directly

Excessive exposure of the eyes to the sun can harm the eyes as the UV rays are only good for the skin. Exposure of the eyes to the sun can cause a condition called solar retinopathy which causes damage to the eye’s retina. If the weather is sweltering, we recommend wearing sunglasses and avoiding direct gaze at the sun.

  1. Have Emergency Eye Wash Stations Near Chemicals at the Workplace

An eye wash station should be accessible to workers using chemicals. Then, they can use the eye wash to avert severe eye injuries in case of a chemical splash. The eye wash station should be placed about 10 seconds from where the chemical is used. To be more safety conscious, you can quickly visit the nearest community health center after washing the eye for a proper checkup.

   5. Avoid the use of creams with sensitive chemicals

Hydroquinone in creams can affect your vision. When you use skin care products for the face, check for sensitive chemical so that it doesn’t cause temporary or permanent eye injury.

  1. Reduce Stress

Stress can cause high adrenaline, which puts pressure on the eyes, leading to blurred vision. Avoid looking at the screen, whether your phone, TV or laptop, for a long time. It often affects the eyes in the long run.

Final Words

Your eyes are your greatest asset so you have to take proper care of them. Severe stress, unhealthy food, dangerous chemicals, and even the sun can cause eye injury. If you notice you have recurring problems with your eyes, don’t hesitate to seek medical assistance or visit the nearest health care center.
