Why You Should Volunteer This Holiday

December 10th, 2021

This holiday, you should do more than lounge on your couch and wait for it to end. Not all holidays should be spent suntanning, or watching snowflakes melt into the ground.

There are many things to do to make your holiday fruitful and rewarding, and volunteering is one of them.

As the name implies, volunteering means to utilize your time, effort, and labor doing community service. Volunteering is not paid labor, it’s simply giving back to society.

There are no cons to this. In fact, some prestigious institutions around the world look out for volunteering history to consider individuals for admission.

Here are some reasons why you should volunteer:

  • Volunteering gives a sense of purpose
You may have faced the question of purpose at different points in life. Volunteering has a way of nudging one into a thoughtful state of mind because it involves doing what matters most in the world: helping people.
Putting yourself in a position where you can help people you barely know, gives a sense of purpose, and having a sense of purpose can give you peace.
  • Cardiovascular health
Research has shown that volunteering lowers blood pressure, and can take the credit for healthier hearts. This proves that volunteering is good for your heart in more ways than one.
The singular act of helping people is a two-way thing; you help people, and your activities help you become stronger and healthier.
  • Volunteering gives you a professional experience
Volunteers are often accepted by several professional organizations, e.g., the Red Cross. Working with these organizations will equip you with professional experience, consequently giving your Curriculum Vitae a professional touch. And this would no doubt be useful in the long run.
You could come out from the holidays with a wealth of knowledge, experience, and professional skills you didn’t have before.
  • You have more time during holidays
Effective volunteering requires some of your time. During the holidays, you can volunteer easily because you have time to do that.
Giving your time to voluntary work is simply giving out value, and it will serve you well in the long run.
  • Volunteering promotes personal growth and self-development
Actively participating in voluntary services makes room for personal growth.
Volunteering introduces you to different persons with different capabilities and areas of specialty.
Besides, it’s a lot of fun!

Now that you know these facts, why not consider volunteering? If you’re looking to give back to society, don’t look too far. You can volunteer at a community health center close to you, or a community wellness center around. Community health facilities are always in need of hands because a community health center is the first point of call in the event of a medical crisis or an emergency. It needs as much help as it can get.

You can also spend your holiday acquainting yourself with like-minded people. Working with other volunteers can give you a sense of family, and the bonds you build can last a while.

Do not get discouraged if your first volunteering experience doesn’t go so well. Hang around long enough to know the ropes, long enough to get the hang of it.
