4 Things That Could Be Hurting Your Mental Health (PART 1/2)

July 25th, 2021

Maintaining good mental health requires constant effort. It’s your responsibility to build a positive and nourishing environment around you that makes you feel good, optimistic, and hopeful, most of the time, if not all the time. Hence, it’s important to look out for things that could be doing just the opposite.

Here are four things that could be hurting your mental health:

(Note: If you’re dealing with mental health issues, seek professional help. Visit a mental health Charlotte clinic and get connected to qualified providers.)

1. Reluctance towards mental health care

So many people struggle with mental health issues but they fail to recognize that.

The extreme mood swings aren’t just you having a bad day. You feeling anxious or low all the time for no reason isn’t “normal”.

One of the first steps to take is to educate yourself about mental health. Make it a key part of your daily conversations. Then proceed to understand your own mental health. Be more aware of your mood and feelings. Unless you admit that there is a problem, you will not be able to fix that problem.

So, get over your reluctant approach towards mental health. Become more attentive to your wellbeing, identify red flags, and address them promptly. If you need answers, information or help, visit FQHC North Carolina and talk to doctors.

2. Uncontrolled media consumption

When you’re bored, you may likely rush to social media platforms and start scrolling through endlessly. While this may seem harmless, it’s not good for your mental health.

There have been numerous studies highlighting how social media can be bad for your mental health.

A report on the website of US National Library of Medicine titled ‘Social Media Use and Its Connection to Mental Health: A Systematic Review’ mentions that “A number of studies have been conducted on the impacts of social media, and it has been indicated that the prolonged use of social media platforms such as Facebook may be related to negative signs and symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress”. Check the report here.

But today, the impact is likely much more amplified if your feeds are filled with negative media.

Even passively consuming them for a long period may hurt your mental health. After all, repeatedly seeing things of the same theme will eventually affect your subconscious, negatively shaping your perceptions and mindset, thereby affecting your mental health.

So, control your social media usage. And when you’re using it, be aware of the kind of media you’re consuming. Stay away from negative content as much as possible.
