Truly, not every addiction is a bad thing. But addiction in the form of substance or alcohol dependence and the likes are really bad for your health. Therefore, admitting that you have a problem is the first step to addiction recovery and making a decision to quit is another good step. Thumbs up if you have moved past step one. Read on to learn the do’s and don’ts when grappling with addiction.

Do’s

  1. Seek personal and professional support. You are going to need all the support you can get on this voyage. A visit to a behavioral counselor is recommended as part of professional support.
  2. Get a hobby or pick up an old one. When your life is filled with rewarding activities and the things you enjoy doing, your addiction will begin to lose its appeal.
  3. Set worthwhile goals. Looking forward to something can be a powerful antidote to drug addiction. It does not have to be something grand, just worthwhile.
  4. Consider the things and people that are important to you – your partner, children, pets, your career, or your health. How does your addiction affect them?
  5. Remove all objects that go along with the habit, as well as other items that remind you of the habit. Replace such with exercise, wholesome practice, and healthy food.

Don’ts

  1. Dwelling on the past and reliving past mistakes is counterproductive for someone recovering from an addiction. Focus on the future.
  2. Do not underestimate your condition nor overestimate your capacity to recover. Be realistic, tenacious, and patient with yourself.
  3. Halt the feeling of guilt and shame if you relapse. You are trying your best. Learn from your relapses and forge ahead with your treatment course.
  4. Stay away from individuals, places, and gatherings that trigger your dependence. It is a wise course of action to avoid such to enable you to recover.
  5. Do not fall into dangerous behaviors or emotions like blame or self-pity. Focus on your treatment and try to stay optimistic.
