The C.W. Williams Community Health Center, Inc. is proud to celebrate its 40th anniversary of service to the community and to honor its founder, the late Dr. Charles Warren Williams, Sr.

The C.W. Williams Community Health Center, Inc. (CWWCHC) was founded in 1981 by the late Dr. Charles Warren “CW” Williams, Sr., along with the late Peggy Beckwith, founder of the Mecklenburg County Sickle Cell Anemia Program, the late Dr. John Murphy, a local dentist, and the late Rowe “Jack” Motley, the first African American County Commissioner.

Born in Hopkinsville, KY, Dr. Williams was a renowned surgeon, trailblazer, and visionary, accomplishing many “firsts” in his lifetime. He holds the distinction of being the first African-American surgeon on staff at Charlotte Memorial Hospital (now Carolinas Medical Center) and was the brainchild behind the development of the Hyde Park subdivision in north Charlotte. In the mid 1970s, Dr. Williams and several partners established East Independence Plaza, the first black-owned office building in Uptown Charlotte.

Dr. Williams had great passion was for his family, his patients, and the community he so diligently served. He envisioned a place where the medically underserved and economically disadvantaged of Mecklenburg County could receive quality healthcare. In 1981, his vision came to fruition with the establishment of The C. W. Williams Community Health Center, Inc., where he served as the Center’s medical director until his death in 1982.

Today, and most especially during these extraordinary, unprecedented times, CWWCHC continues to be a mainstay for thousands of people who rely on the Center daily. The essential interconnectedness of our human family encourages CWWCHC to focus on our most vulnerable populations – the elderly, those with pre-existing medical conditions, those without access to reliable healthcare, the disabled, and those living in poverty. Now 40 years strong, CWWCHC remains steadfast to its mission and inspired by the innumerable healthcare professionals and frontline workers whose tireless dedication displays the very best of our community spirit and human compassion for each other. We are truly grateful for our founders for their remarkable vision, our patients and community for their continued trust in us, and our staff members for their ongoing commitment to excellence.

We look forward to serving you for many more years to come!
